
Prof. Dr. Sue Ann Costa Clemens is one of the founders and the Program Director of the first Master Program in Vaccinology in the world, aimed to support capacity building in developing countries, at the University of Siena. Professor of Paedicatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health at the University of Oxford, Director of Oxford Latam Unit, the first international campus of the university. Professor and Head of Clinical Department and International Relations at Instituto Carlos Chagas, in Brazil. Senior Advisor and Vaccine Development Consultant in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. With over 25 years of experience, in both academia and pharmaceutical industry (GSK, Merck, Novartis), in different roles, with increasing responsibility in clinical development, medical , regulatory and governmental affairs and medical governance. She has led phase 1- 4 studies for vaccines against rotavirus, HPV, pneumococcus, meningococcus, pentavalent, the new oral vaccine against poliomyelitis, nOPV2 (first WHO ever approved vaccine for emergency use) and others. She has also been in charge of Continuous Medical Education as a member of the International Group at the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG- Philadelphia, USA). In 2006, Prof. Dr. Sue Ann founded the clinical/medical consulting company GRID RIO and GRID Europe – “Global Research in Infectious Diseases” in partnership with GRID Switzerland in Zurich, GRID Germany in Munich and GRID Singapore. Clients include prominent multinational pharmaceutical as well as local private and public health companies. Since 2017, GRID Europe is one of the sponsors of the Master Program of Vaccinology at the University of Siena. Prof. Dr. Sue Ann Costa Clemens is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for Covid-19 at MRI Gates, Curevac and Clover. Principal Investigator of ChadOx-S1 vaccine trials, coordinating Principal Investigator for Clover Covid-19 vaccine efficacy trial in Latam.Principal Investigator in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the Site Readiness grant, preparing 22 sites in 7 countries in Latin America for conducting phase 3 COVID -19 vaccine trials. Member of the experts’ group on pandemic recommendations for Ministers of Health of G7, in 2021. Member of the experts group preparing a proposal to WHO on “A New International Framework to Support Capacity in Clinical Trials”, led by the British Government for WHO World Health Assembly. She’s managed over 500 people and 90,000 subjects in trials and supported tech transfer negotiations for vaccines. Her publications include topics on Vaccinology, Education and Public Health. She is the author of “History of a Vaccine”, the report of the Brazilian scientst who led the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine studies in the country, and co-author of “The First 100% Brazilian vaccine against COVID-19” , chapter: Clinical development. For her positive contribution towards Global Health, Prof. Dr. Sue Ann Costa Clemens was awarded an “Honorary CBE” by Queen Elizabeth (2021) , the title of “Commander of the Republic of Brazil, with the Medal of Order of Medical Merit in the class of Commander ” , by the Brazilian President (2021), the title of “Commander in the Order of Rio Branco” (2022), among several others. Currently, she coordinates eight Clinical Trials for COVID-19 and for vaccines to eradicate poliomyelitis.
